What is physical therapy?Physical therapy is the provision of services to people and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and function ability throughout the lifespan. It includes the provision of services in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by the process of aging or that of injury or disease. The method of physical therapy sees full and functional movement as at the heart of what it means to be healthy. Physical therapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing movement potential, within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. It involves the interaction between the patient & environment, families and care givers, in a process of assessing movement potential and in establishing agreed upon goals and objectives using knowledge and skills unique to physical therapists. The physical therapists’ distinctive view of the body and its movement needs and potential is central to determining a diagnosis and an intervention strategy and is consistent whatever the setting in which practice is undertaken. These settings will vary in relation to whether physical therapy is concerned with health promotion, prevention, treatment or rehabilitation.

What can I expect from physical therapy?Your initial evaluation will consist of a sit down talk where the physical therapist will ask questions that are pertinent to your condition. The physical therapist will then take measurements of the effected and immediate surrounding region in order to note the current motion, strength and tissue mobility. At the conclusion of the visit the physical therapist will discuss their findings with you. The physical therapist will explain what the findings indicate and how he/she plans on addressing your specific condition. It is at this time that we encourage you to ask as many questions as you have.

There are times where the patient will experience a “pinch” or “deep pressure”, but we ask that the patients not feel pain. Can physical therapy help without pain? Yes, and we have found greater success when we provide tissue specific treatments that respect the osseous alignment, tissue integrity and individual perception of pain.
